Doing Self-Assessment With ChatGPT To Make Informed Decisions About Your Job Search and Career Development

Have you ever been at a crossroads, wondering how to navigate the complex terrain of job searching and career development? If so, you aren’t alone.

As a career coach, I work with clients to help them reflect, assess, and make decisions and actions on how they can move forward in their career. But, not every job seeker or career professional is in a financial place in their life to invest in a coach, enter ChatGPT!

In this blog post, I will explain the significance of self-assessment, explore the capabilities of ChatGPT, and show you how this AI tool can become your ally in making choices that align with your aspirations.

Why Is Self-Assessment Important?

Before we dive into how ChatGPT can revolutionize your self-assessment journey, let's first establish why self-assessment is a cornerstone of effective career development. Imagine setting sail on a ship without a map, compass, or a clear destination in mind. It's a risky endeavor, isn't it? You wouldn’t do it on sea so why do it in your career? Self-assessment is the process of gaining a deeper understanding of yourself, your strengths, weaknesses, interests, values, and aspirations, particularly as it relates to your career.

Self-assessment helps you align your career choices with your personal goals and values. It empowers you to pursue a path that resonates with who you are, increasing your chances of finding fulfillment in your work. And when you know yourself, you make more informed decisions that recognize your strengths and areas for improvement- definitely a valuable perspective as you make decisions on how to move your career forward!

What Is ChatGPT?

If you are entirely new to ChatGPT, perhaps do a little Googling because it’s taking the world by storm for its capacity to assist with a wide array of tasks, including answering questions and generating creative content to provide insights and recommendations.

Now, you might wonder how an AI language model like ChatGPT can play a pivotal role in self-assessment and career development. The answer lies in its remarkable versatility and its ability to engage in meaningful conversations. ChatGPT is not just a text generator; it's a tool that can foster insightful dialogues and provide valuable assistance on multiple fronts related to your career journey.

Self-Assessment With ChatGPT

So, how can ChatGPT support you in self-assessment for career development? ChatGPT can serve as your personal FREE career coach, offering thought-provoking questions to help you reflect on your strengths, interests, and goals. It can guide you in assessing your current skill set and areas for improvement and can even help you understand how your unique attributes align with different career paths, providing clarity on which direction to pursue.

When you're unsure of your strengths, weaknesses or interests, ChatGPT can prompt you to think about your past achievements, moments of recognition, or tasks that come naturally to you. It can ask questions like, "What accomplishments are you most proud of in your career?" or "What skills do others often compliment you on?" These prompts help uncover your core strengths. Or "What aspects of your work do you find most challenging?" or "Where do you think you could improve in your current role?" Honest answers to these prompts pave the way for personal growth and development.

Self-assessment extends beyond just skills and what you’re good at- it's about identifying your passions, interests and uncovering what genuinely and authentically fulfills you at work. ChatGPT can engage you in conversations that explore your hobbies, what you enjoy doing in your free time, and what subjects or activities genuinely excite you. These insights can be invaluable when seeking a career that aligns with your interests.

Making career decisions can be overwhelming, particularly when we don’t have a lot of direction or information to go on. The value of AI-driven self-assessment lies in its objectivity, comprehensiveness, and its ability to provide insights that may not be immediately apparent. It offers a fresh perspective, untainted by personal biases or preconceived notions- just what you want from a coach!

Now listen, I am not trying to say ChatGPT can fully replace the value of a human career coach. But it is a great tool and what I really like about ChatGPT as a career coach is its ability to engage in continuous conversations and adapt to your evolving self-assessment journey. As you gather more insights and self-awareness, ChatGPT can provide even more personalized recommendations to steer you in the right direction.

Prompts To Doing Self-Assessment With ChatGPT

You’ll want to start with telling ChatGPT what you want it to do and why you are asking for help. A good prompt to start with is, “I want you to act as a career coach and help me reflect on my career so I can make some decisions about what might be next for me. Do you understand?”.

When I type this prompt into ChatGPT, here is the reply I get:

“Of course, I understand! I'd be happy to help you reflect on your career and make decisions about your next steps. To get started, it would be helpful for me to know a bit more about your current situation and your goals. Can you tell me more about your career background, your interests, and any specific questions or concerns you have regarding your career?”

Because you are giving ChatGPT specific information (think resume content, cover letter content, or your own thoughts at the moment), the AI is able to help you not just using all the information from the internet, but information that is specific to you!

To help you get started on your self-assessment journey, here are some practical examples of questions or prompts you can ask ChatGPT:

  1. "What are my core strengths, and how can I leverage them in my career?" ChatGPT can assist in identifying your strengths, whether they're in problem-solving, communication, leadership, or other areas.

  2. "What skills do I need to improve or acquire to excel in my current or desired role?" ChatGPT can guide you in recognizing areas where skill development can be beneficial.

  3. "What aspects of my job do I find most fulfilling, and why?" This question can help you uncover your passions and interests, which are crucial for aligning your career with your values.

  4. "Are there any achievements in my professional life that I'm particularly proud of?" ChatGPT can help you reflect on past accomplishments to identify your areas of excellence.

  5. "What challenges or obstacles have I encountered in my career, and how did I overcome them?" This can shed light on your resilience and problem-solving abilities.

  6. "What are my long-term career goals, and how can I break them down into actionable steps?" ChatGPT can assist in setting clear objectives and creating a roadmap to achieve them.

Final Thoughts…

It’s essential to recognize that ChatGPT has its limitations. AI, as advanced as it is, is not a replacement for human expertise and judgment. In general, ChatGPT lacks personal context about your life and experiences. It doesn't know your unique circumstances, history, or emotional nuances. Therefore, it may not fully understand the intricacies of your situation.

Remember, ChatGPT's responses are generated based on patterns in the data it was trained on. It doesn't have access to real-time information, and its advice may not always reflect the latest trends or developments in your field. And while ChatGPT can engage in natural-sounding conversations, it doesn't possess emotional intelligence. It may not fully grasp the emotional aspects of your career choices, such as your personal values or the deeper motivations behind your decisions.

All this to say, ChatGPT should be just one element of your career coaching journey amongst many other methodologies that make use of human centric tactics like networking, job shadowing, career exploration conversations, informational interviews with other human beings etc. It’s just one more tool in your arsenal to help navigate your career but it shouldn't be the only one!
