How Some Adults Succeed With Basic Skills & Why That Eventually Changes

More often than not, adult education is framed as a second chance to go back and fix what was missed. While there are some elements of truth, it would be unfair to assume that those without basic education are starting from scratch.

In reality, many adults who return to learn basic reading, writing, or numeracy are not starting from zero. Many already have careers, families, and responsibilities. In fact, it’s not uncommon for them to have built entire lives without relying on these skills in a formal way.

That’s what makes their decision to go back to education even more powerful. It takes real courage to step away from a comfortable routine and enter the classroom alter in life.

But this raises an important question:” How did they go this far without these foundations in the first place?

Building a Business on Practical Skills

Some adults succeed by developing hands-on or creative expertise. Traces are one of the best examples of this. You can find renovation specialists, decorators, or even craftspeople with a reputation built through quality work and word of mouth who struggle with basic literacy and numeracy. Niche services built on unique talent may not necessary requires basic education skills to thrive.

Ultimately, success comes from skill, and not education. As day-to-day work relies on their experience and practical knowledge, it’s easy to see how uneducated adults can still make a living, and often run highly profitable businesses in specialist markets.

But as the business grows and it’s time to manage complex contracts, hire employees, or reach out to bigger clients through emails, challenges can appear.

Relying on Others to Fill the Gap

Another common path is collaboration. Many adults build successful lives by working with others who handle tasks they find difficult. A business partner or an assistant could take care of reading, writing, and admin work.

At first, this arrangement can work well, and it can allow each person to focus on their strengths. But over time, however, relying on someone else can feel too restrictive, especially when important decisions require someone else’s interpretations.

They Didn’t Need Academic Skills

Not every journey involves business. Some adults leave school early and move into roles where academic skills don’t matter, such is the case for stay-at-home parents. They are managing a household, which requires high organizational skills, time management, and constant problem solving.

There’s no denying that their responsibilities are highly valuable. But, as they don’t involve regular reading or writing, years can pass without needing these skills.

Many adults can build happy and fulfilling lives without relying on basic education skills. The turning point often comes with a desire for change. Often, this begins with a desire for independence, whether at home or in business. Indeed, growth feels unachievable alone because filling out forms or understanding contracts can be too difficult. But asking others for support can’t be a long-term solution either.

So, this is often when individuals who are highly skilled in their own right choose to embrace basic literacy and numeracy to make progress possible.
