Intern Series: Utilizing Company Resources As An Intern

Being an intern brings up a lot of questions and doubts. It is this constant  “should I do ___” or “should I not do ____” but what’s one thing you should always do?

UTILIZE COMPANY RESOURCES!

This not only applies to taking ownership of your work, but all the company has to offer.

When folks think of company resources what first comes to mind are retirement plans, equity sharing, and maternity/paternity leave but for interns, things look a bit different. So, let’s walk through some resources YOU can utilize as an intern!

1. ERG’s

What is an ERG? Good question, an ERG is an “Employee Resource Group”. BetterUp.com defines ERGs as “An employee-led group that fosters inclusivity and builds community.”

ERGs can revolve around Ethnicity, Shared Interests, Sexual Orientation and more. What is the benefit here? Well networking for starters but beyond that, a feeling of connection and community with folks outside of your job role.

If you get the chance to join a group, take it! ERG work is a huge differentiator on your resume and shows you took initiative, which are great qualities to have as an intern.

Check out our Creative Conversation Starters For Authentic Networking article to get you a little bit more comfortable networking in ERG’s.

2. (Online) Courses & Trainings

Internships are for you to grow both personally and professionally. Whether you're looking to sharpen up your SQL skills or become CPR certified, your company may have exactly what you’re looking for! And if they don’t, they may provide monetary incentives for you to do it on your own – so don’t be afraid to ask!

3. Networking/Speaker Events

One of my favorite features of having an internship is the opportunity to meet so many great professionals both internally and externally.

So don’t skip that company social at TopGolf or forget to attend the industry convention your company invited you to! You never know who you’ll meet and where that could take your career.

Internships are also a great way to grow personally. So if networking or speaking events are a growth opportunity for you, get comfortable being uncomfortable and try something new. That’s how you grow!

4. Company Facilities

Companies build their culture and physical locations to draw in and retain employees since the job market is so competitive nowadays.

So, your company may have A break room with games such as ping pong, pool, chess and more. Here at RV, we have access to a full basketball court, ping-pong, a bowling alley (yes, a bowling alley), weight room and so much more. (I’d apply if I were you – this is not an advertisement ;)

5. Free Food/Free Coffee!

What intern turn down anything free let alone food or coffee!?

But seriously, it can be hard as an intern to think you have equal access to company resources when compared to full-time employees. Remember, the entire reason for your internship is to prepare you for a full-time position so why not act like it!
