Leader’s Style: Build Your Personal Brand Through Authentic Appearance
I used to dress how I thought a leader should look. But building a personal brand through appearance starts with how you feel when you get dressed. Not how you think you should look, or what your boss might prefer. Once I figured this out, I stopped feeling like I was a stranger. I started feeling like myself, and here’s how you can, too.
Comfort Communicates Confidence
There’s nothing better than wearing clothes that actually fit you, that don’t pinch or pull or make you secretly fiddle with your bra strap all day. And comfort isn’t lazy. It’s powerful. You start focusing on what you’re saying and who you’re becoming. You make more eye contact and you move more freely.
Choosing comfortable clothing doesn’t mean avoiding structure or sophistication. To me, comfort is achieved by choosing soft undergarments, followed by breathable pants you don’t need to unbutton after a hearty meal. Or, a well-tailored dress that skims your body without clinging, letting you sit cross-legged.
Fabric Holds Energy, Too
There’s something deeply grounding about natural fibres. Linen, cotton, and silk breathe with you. They also change with the weather. They age alongside you, gently. Not everything needs to be synthetic, sculpting, or perfect.
That’s why my go-to is a worn-in cotton shirt I thrifted years ago. Sometimes the imperfect textures and worn-out shirts say you’ve lived a little. You’ve got things to do, you’re not pressed and polished like a showroom sample.
Wearing what feels real does something subtle to your spirit. It keeps you connected. And the way you show up to work, coffee, or that event full of intimidating people changes drastically. You don’t feel so armoured up or sweaty and uncomfortable.
The Small Things Aren’t That Small
Little details tell stories, too. They show where you’ve been. And you don’t need to be immaculate, just intentional.
Maybe you always wear the same gold ring, get a lash lift every now and then, or your eyeliner is always a bit smudged, but in a good way. For me, this has always been a nice set of lashes, and a satin lipstick. These are signature things or little breadcrumbs. You’re building a visual memory in people’s minds without even realising it. That’s branding, just quieter and way more honest.
Let Your Hair Tell the Truth
You don’t need to have a sleek blowout every day to look polished. In fact, sometimes polished just looks fake. You can have frizz and power in the same sentence. I once walked into a room with my curls undone and still commanded it.
Hair is so intimate. It carries identity, culture, and memory. Some of us grew up being told to tame it. Others were told to change it. But what if you let your hair just exist as it is? What if you worked with it, not against it? That’s when people start to see you.
Colour Can Be a Quiet Weapon
Neutrals are beautiful. But so are stylish colours that make your skin come alive. There’s no rulebook here. I always feel strong in the navy, so I wear it when I have to attend important and maybe even slightly intimidating meetings.
You don’t need a colour palette to do this right. You just need self trust and a little trial and error. Sometimes you put something on and it makes your eyes light up and you feel not bigger, but more there.
Don’t Wait for a Special Occasion
Wearing your favourite outfit for no reason is the reason. A lot of us save our best clothes for things that never arrive. The clothes you own are meant for your life now, not a photoshoot or a gala you haven’t been invited to.
There’s so much power in deciding that today is worth wearing the nice thing. Because you’re not dressing for attention, you’re dressing for alignment. When your insides and your outsides match, things start to click.
Your Voice Isn’t Just What You Say
We’re so used to thinking a brand is a logo or a tagline. It wasn’t until I walked into a meeting unprepared that I realised your brand is also the way you carry yourself and how your posture speaks before you do. We underestimate that stuff.
Personal branding is just how people remember you. And your appearance is the first thing they see. So if you’re walking around dressed like someone you think you’re supposed to be, people feel that dissonance.
Conclusion
You don’t need to get it right on the first try. I know I didn’t. But eventually, I learned what works for me and suddenly, I started feeling lighter. So, try new things, and look weird sometimes. Change your mind. Your style will shift as your seasons change, and that’s part of growth.
