Should I Interview For A Job I Don't Want?

Last week, I received an interview invitation for the job I had applied for one month before, which I was no longer interested in. However, I decided to show up anyway and it was the wisest decision I’ve ever made. It is a common scenario among job seekers. This article will explain 5 reasons why you should accept the interview invitation regardless of whether you intend to take the job or not.

1. Gain Interview Experience

Job interview is a conversation between (a) potential employers and a job applicant. It is a time for the employer to appraise the applicant’s qualifications, characteristics, and suitability for the position. A mock job interview is considered necessary before any actual one as it brings experience and confidence to the applicant. You will never practice enough for a job interview because you might not know which questions to be asked by the employers.

Therefore, if you count the interview for the job you do not intend to take as a practice, I guarantee it would be the best mock interview ever. In addition to the new questions you may be asked, you also have a chance to experience the real atmosphere of an actual interview.

This practice session is better than practicing in front of the mirror!

2. Valuable Feedback

Receiving feedback after interviewing is an expected/desirable part that applicants want to know. The hiring manager will evaluate you, find out your strengths and weaknesses. Post-interview feedback lets you know what should be improved to become a stronger candidate. Collecting this feedback from your interviews is a crucial element during your job-seeking journey.

3. Expand Your Network

Each interview brings new people to you. Meeting employers in your favorite industries will widen your relationships. They are all potential connections for your future career path. Reaching out to your interviewers after interviewing and building a tight relationship with them will connect you with your future job prospects, open to new suitable positions.

4. Filter Your Career Goals

It is essential to identify the reasons why you do not want a job. You should think about what you like and do not like about this company, this position. Go back to the job description, reread it and clarify which words, phases make you no longer need this job. Having this knowledge will save your time in upcoming job searches.

5. Learn About Companies

If you misunderstand anything in the job description, please do not hesitate to ask your employer to clarify. As you know, the last question before finishing an interview is “Do you have any questions for us?”, this is a good chance for you to learn about your employer/company better. For example, company culture is one of the main factors you may be concerned about to accept this job. Just ask the hirer about that!

If you do take the interview, you should:

  • Be polite

    • Even though this interview is not too important for you, be prepared, neatly dressed, and punctual.

  • Stay engaged

    • Paying attention during the interview, remaining respectful, and answering the questions to the best of your ability.

  • Be grateful

    • Remember that not only you but also the hirers spend time on this interview session. Don’t forget to say “Thank you” before you leave. Showing your appreciation, kindness, and professionalism will leave a positive impression on employers.
